Violence No.1 social issueBy IAN WILSON, CALGARY SUN
Domestic violence is the number one social issue that concerns Calgarians, according to a recent survey.
The study, conducted by the Angus Reid Group, found 54% of people consider domestic violence the most troubling issue.
"That means the community has worked together to decrease the shame and the stigma around the issue," said Karen Blase, executive director of the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter.
"The bad news is it's happening so much."
Blase said for every woman who makes it into a shelter, another 3.6 are turned away.
"We're full -- we have community crisis counsellors who go out and help people, but we have no space."
Blase said she hopes the survey results will prompt the province to free up more funds for prevention programs.
The survey rated road safety and youth gangs as the next-most troubling issues.
