KITCHENER -- Academics from across Canada have written to Wilfrid Laurier University expressing dismay at a job posting for a psychology professor that says only women need apply.

The Ontario Human Rights Commission has also received a number of letters from professors questioning the university's use of a special section of the Human Rights Code, an official said yesterday.

The ad says: "The department is attempting to address a gender imbalance . . . and therefore will hire a woman for this position, as allowed by the special program of the Ontario Human Rights Commission."

Laurier has received about a dozen letters from academics so far, said Steve Lupker, a professor of psychology at the University of Western Ontario in London. Mr. Lupker said he wrote to the university urging it to withdraw the ad, which was posted electronically last month and sent to a number of groups. The ad will appear in newspapers and newsletters of academic groups in the fall.
