TORONTO -- The United Nations launched an international day to stop violence against women yesterday.
Noeleen Heyzer, director of the UN Development Fund for Women, proclaimed a World Declaration for the Eradication of Violence Against Women, to be marked annually on Nov. 25.
"Let us take this opportunity for both reflection and for action," she told a gathering of Toronto-based Men Against Violence Against Women held to remember the Dec. 6, 1989, Montreal massacre, when gunman Marc LÚpine killed 14 women students.
