Violence

On the eve of International Women's Day, it was discouraging to read Barbara Amiel's comment (Feminists, Fascists, and Other Radicals, March 6).

I will not dignify it with any comment other than to correct one error. When referring to the Statistics Canada study (1993) that states one-half of Canadian women have experienced violence, Ms. Amiel casually asserts this definition of violence includes glances and off-colour jokes.

Not so. Violence in this survey was defined as "experiences of physical or sexual assault that are consistent with legal definitions of these offences and could be acted upon by a police officer."
