Wife convicted of Briton's murder

The Times

AN AMERICAN woman who shot dead her British husband after he boasted of killing five women has been convicted in Phoenix, Arizona, of his murder. Dominique Keys, 54, shot Russell Keys, 40, three times in the chest. The murder happened days after he was questioned by British police in connection with five alleged killings in the Blackpool area.

Keys fled to join his wife - a US citizen he had met through a lonely hearts advertisement - in Phoenix, where the shooting happened. This week she admitted the killing and was convicted of first degree murder. She will be sentenced next month.

The couple had set up home in Gloucestershire, where Keys was arrested after he spoke of the murders of five women to a psychiatric nurse. He was released by Lancashire police without charge after they found no evidence to corroborate his claims.

Keys's lawyers claimed that she opened fire in self-defence after her husband threatened to strangle her, but prosecutors portrayed her as having coaxed her delusional husband into claiming that he killed the women to sell the story to a newspaper.
