TV ads target wifebeatersBy Jason Botchford
The Toronto Sun
Hard-hitting commercials encouraging people to report wifebeaters to Crime Stoppers will help combat Toronto's most prevalent violent crime, police say.
The TV and radio spots now airing -- part of a month-long Crime Stoppers initiative -- will raise public awareness of domestic violence which is still commonly unreported, police said.
"Of the violent crimes in the city, it is the most common and the most serious," said Supt. William Blair. "But there is still a perception it is a private matter to be dealt with within the family."
Last year there were 27,000 reports of domestic assaults in Toronto and about 6,500 charges laid, Blair said. In about 85% of the cases the victim is a woman.
More Crime Stoppers tips will give cops information to intervene in cases of ongoing abuse, Blair said.
