The Worry Over The Rising Divorce Rate
SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Divorces are rising in China's commercial center of Shanghai and concerned city fathers are seeking ways to stem the increase, the official Shanghai Star said Friday.
Some 13,000 couples divorced by mutual agreement in Shanghai last year, up 21 percent from 1997, the newspaper said.
The city government had opened a telephone hotline to help deal with marriage problems and offer advice, it said.
Divorces between Shanghai women married to foreign men were also on the rise, the newspaper said.
``Some married for money and overseas citizenship but found the reality of life abroad did not live up to their expectations,'' said Wei Guizhen, a lawyer from the Shanghai Zhendan Law Office.
