POMONA, Calif. (AP) — A mother whose 5-month-old son died after being left for hours in her car on a hot summer day was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.

Kimberly Sue Fudge was sentenced Thursday for second-degree murder in the death of her son, Cailan Cutillo, on June 14.

The woman had gone to a Claremont hotel at 7:30 a.m. that day to talk to the boy's father following an argument. She eventually fell asleep in the room as temperatures outside rose above 90 degrees.

Authorities said the infant, strapped in a car seat, was left unattended for more than six hours. He died before Ms. Fudge returned to the car, found him not breathing and called for help.

The boy's father was not charged.
