Saskatoon -- A 12-year-old girl charged with mutilating cats will appear in court today on charges of animal cruelty. The girl, who can't be named under the Young Offenders Act, was expected to enter a plea. Police investigated a string of cat mutilations in Saskatoon last fall.
The cat killings prompted a U.S.- based animal rights group to offer a reward for information leading to a conviction. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, based in Norfolk, Va., found out about the Saskatoon cat killings while investigating a similar case in Ontario. The mutilations -- described by police as incredibly gruesome and disturbing -- were initially discovered by a group of children. The discovery triggered an investigation by the Saskatoon SPCA and city police. CP
