CALGARY (CP) -- The mother of a toddler found dead in a vacant apartment will undergo a pyschiatric assessment.

Rie Fujii, 23, appeared briefly in court Monday on a charge of failing to properly dispose of a body.

Fujii, dressed in a black sweatshirt and pants, looked impassively around the packed courtroom.

She is set to return to court on July 9 to determine whether she is fit to stand trial on the charge.

Her 15-month-old son, Domenic Ryu Brown, was found dead last week. A cause of death has yet to be released.

Police also spent two days last week searching the Bow River for Domenic's three-month-old sister Gemini. It's believed Gemini was wrapped in plastic bags and dumped in the waterway a few weeks ago.

Fujii's lawyer, Bob Batting, said no new charges have been laid against his client.

Police have yet to interview Peter Brown, the children's father.

He has told several media outlets that Fujii had prevented him from seeing the children.

Fujii, of Japan, came to Calgary four years ago on a student visa.
