Dad of dead and missing kids in jail

As his ex-girlfriend was being charged with killing their two kids, Calgarian Peter Brown was sitting in a jail cell, the Sun has learned.

Brown, 23, appeared briefly in a provincial courtroom yesterday for allegedly breaching the conditions of a community sentence he was handed in June. Lawyer Adriano Iovinelli said his client has been in custody for about 10 days while he waits to appear before the judge who handed him his conditional term.

His former girlfriend, Rie Fujii, was formally charged last Wednesday with two counts of second-degree murder in the slayings of their children. Fujii was charged in the death of son Domenic Brown, 15 months, and the disappearance of his younger sister, Gemini, 3 months. Fujii returns to court Aug. 31.

Police believe the younger child is dead, although her body has never been found.

Their father was taken into police custody June 12 on outstanding warrants and to be questioned about any possible knowledge he might have about the case. He is not suspected of any foul play involving the kids.

Brown pleaded guilty two weeks later to a series of minor charges and was handed a four-month conditional sentence with a curfew and 30 hours of community service.

Iovinelli adjourned the case until Sept. 4.
