Man who served 3 years retroactively acquitted
Friday, August 24, 2001
The Globe and MailToronto -- A man who served three years in prison was retroactively acquitted yesterday on the basis of new evidence about a former friend who said he beat her, raped her and threatened her life in her suburban Ottawa apartment in 1996.
James Nelson, 34, who now lives in Stratford, Ont., maintained his innocence. The Ontario Court of Appeal set aside his conviction after being told that the woman, a social worker, repeatedly accused people of criminal acts and was convicted of public mischief last year in connection with a false assault complaint against another man.
