Kidnapping Hoax Suspect In CourtYahoo News
The young woman accused of lying about a kidnapping to hide a bank robbery attempt made an appearance in court Thursday.
Amanda Garcia, 22, is accused of lying to a federal agent, a federal charge that could send her to jail for five years.
Meanwhile, according to an affidavit obtained by Action 7 News, authorities began to doubt the kidnapping when Garcia's story started to change.
The woman had told Albuquerque police and later local FBI (news - web sites) agents that her mother and young daughter had been kidnapped, and that she had been ordered to rob the Bank of the West on the 5200 block of Central Avenue Southwest.
She later told officials that the 4-year-old child had not been with her at the time of the abduction, and that she had made it all up to get the police to take her seriously.
Police said the whole story was a hoax.
Garcia is expected to be back in federal court Friday morning for a preliminary hearing.
Her children are staying with family.
