St. Catharines, Ont. -- The Ontario Judicial Council has cleared a judge of professional misconduct for lobbying the provincial government to fight domestic abuse.
At question was whether Madam Justice Lesley Baldwin put judicial independence in disrepute when she wrote a letter, on court letterhead, to then-attorney-general Jim Flaherty in July of 2000, requesting the government take more action against domestic assault cases.
A "reasonable, fair-minded, informed member of the public" would not view her letter as "seriously contrary to the impartiality, integrity and independence of the judiciary," the council concluded in its decision released yesterday.
