Mother charged after baby drowns in bathtub

Child was left unattended, Peel police say

MISSISSAUGA - A seven-month-old boy died yesterday when he drowned after being left alone in a baby bathtub.

His mother, Lesia Brown, 27, was charged with criminal negligence after police and paramedics were called to her high-rise apartment at 3420 Morningstar Drive yesterday morning and found her son Nathaniel dead.

"The child was left alone for a period of time and, as a result, the child drowned. We're waiting for the autopsy report to confirm that," said Constable Harry Tam, spokesman for Peel Region Police.

"I can't disclose how long the child was left alone because that's part of the evidence we will present in court."

The child was in an infant bathtub with a built-in support to keep it above water, police said, but was left alone for up to 15 minutes.

Police were called to the child's apartment at about 10:40 a.m., said Const. Tam.

The infant was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The couple has two other children, and Const. Tam said the baby's father was not home when the infant died. "She was the only one at home."

Ms. Brown will appear for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton today.
