Act now to reform child-custody laws

Letter to the Editor from Hal LeGere Montreal Gazette

Your Aug. 12 editorial, "Divorced dads deserve a break," on the family-court system was very interesting. Our organization is very familiar with the 1998 report of the joint parliamentary committee entitled "For the Sake of the Children." What is not mentioned is that a similar report was produced by the government in 1993, with very similar recommendations.

In addition, the federal, provincial and territorial governments conducted a series of workshops across the country in 2001 on this same issue. Again, similar recommendations resulted.

We expect that some time around the year 2003 or 2004 there will be another form of "consultation." Perhaps our grandchildren will be consulted on this issue, as the Liberal government drags its feet into the foreseeable future on the implementation of changes desired by the vast majority, about 69 per cent, of Canadians.

Children need and have a right - now - to two fit parents whenever possible.
