A Brooklyn woman was charged yesterday with killing her infant son shortly after she gave birth in the basement of her mother's house, police said.

Tracie Crawford-Pickett went to Kings County Hospital on Thursday night complaining of stomach pains, but when doctors examined her, they discovered she was pregnant and close to giving birth, authorities said.

The woman told doctors she had no idea she was pregnant, but when they directed her to stay at the hospital, she walked out and went home to her mother's house on Berriman Street in East New York.

Crawford-Pickett, 25, went into the basement and gave birth to a baby boy, who, she claimed, was not breathing, police said.

She then went up to her room and kept the child there until her mother awoke around 8 a.m. Friday.

She showed her mother the dead infant, and the two of them wrapped the boy in a sheet and brought his body to Kings County.

Crawford-Pickett showed the dead child to doctors and told them she'd had a miscarriage, cops said. She was admitted to the hospital.

An autopsy over the weekend showed the infant had multiple skull fractures and brain damage.

Crawford-Pickett's family refused to answer a reporter's questions at their duplex. Neighbors said they didn't realize the young woman was pregnant.

"I am really shocked," said a neighbor who would not give her name. "This is all a surprise to me. She's very quiet."
