Charges laid in tot's fallBy IAN ROBERTSON, TORONTO SUN
A Scarborough mother whose young daughter suffered broken legs and spinal injuries after falling from their fifth-floor flat faces criminal charges, including one of abandoning her child.
Toronto Police Det.-Const. Karl Bloom said the three-year-old has been in Sick Kids hospital since she fell Oct. 12 from the balcony of the apartment where her mom allegedly left her to go shopping.
Bloom said the child hit the asphalt below the balcony. Police did not disclose how long she was allegedly alone in the apartment.
"The child was very fortunate that she wasn't injured more seriously than she was," Bloom said.
After an investigation by 42 Division officers, the 38-year-old woman was charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm and abandoning a child. She cannot be named to protect the identity of her daughter.
She is to appear in a Scarborough courtroom on Dec. 3.
