Kids come first

Calgary HeraldRe: "Loaded language cut from divorce act," Dec. 10.
I couldn't agree more that changing the wording from "custody and access" to "equal and shared parenting" will do nothing to alleviate the suffering of thousands of children. No matter what words, programs, rights or responsibilities the government comes up with next, the decision to do the right thing by our children lies within each of us. Only when everyone keeps the child as the sole priority, will the suffering stop.
There are lots of great parents who don't live with their children.
On the flip side, the vast majority of children living in poverty in this country live with only one parent.
We must stop saying it's the government's fault because one or both parents choose not to put their kids' needs first.
