Axe murder victim committed vile sex assault says ex-lover

A former girlfriend of a businessman who was later hacked to death by another lover told a jury how he injured her so badly in a sexual assault she has not worked since.

The 37-year-old, identified only as Mrs X, told Leeds Crown Court how she went to Danny O'Brien's house in Rossendale, Lancashire, for "one last fling" in September 1996 after they had decided to end their three-month relationship.

She described in detail how Mr O'Brien, 40, pinned her to the floor and sexually assaulted her - carrying out a violent sex act while watching an extreme pornographic video featuring animals.

She said it seemed to go on forever before Mr O'Brien just got up and walked away without saying a word.

Mrs X, who walks with a stick, said: "I was just shaking, crying, rolled up in a ball on the floor."

She went on to tell the court how she did not see a doctor immediately despite bleeding for three days.

Mrs X said that six weeks after the incident she developed a chronic back pain and later discovered she had three damaged discs in her spine. They had to be fused back together in an operation, she said.

She added: "I do believe this is a result of my assault by Danny although I cannot prove it."

She was giving evidence for the defence in the trial of former escort girl Jan Charlton who admits killing Mr

O'Brien but denies murder.

Mr O'Brien was found dead in the bedroom of the luxury house he shared with Charlton in Midgley, West Yorkshire, on May 23, last year. He had an axe embedded in his head and had been hit at least 20 times.

Charlton claims provocation and self defence after Mr O'Brien threatened to kill both her and her three-year-old daughter.
